FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK
Dust off your tightest jeans, unfold your most ironic T-shirt: The CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival is once again upon us, and New York is chock full of badge-toting indie rockers, hipster fans, music bloggers, and label execs. Boasting a roster of over 1,000 bands performing in more than 50 venues throughout the city, navigating the teeming hordes can be maddening. Luckily, we’ve picked out a few highlights for you:

Tonight, check out Deerhunter (Nov. 17, Bowery Ballroom, 7 p.m.), an eccentric mix of garage rock and electronica. Prefer something a bit more experimental? Try Xiu Xiu, playing at the Kill Rockstars label showcase (Nov. 17, Blender Theater at Gramercy, 7 p.m.).

Thursday is an indie dance party, featuring the Daft Punk–esque stylings of blog darlings Simian Mobile Disco (Nov. 18, Music Hall of Williamsburg, 10 p.m.). Glasgow rockers 1990s are set to tear down the Bowery Ballroom backing British Sea Power (Nov. 18, Bowery Ballroom, 7 p.m.), while the ex-Unicorns pop outfit Islands play the Highline Ballroom with hype-darlings Yo Majesty (Nov. 18, Highline Ballroom, 8 p.m.).

Friday packs in some of the heavy hitters of the CMJ lineup: Sri Lankan rapper M.I.A. plays a sold-out show at Terminal 5—bring those badges and prepare to wait (Nov. 19, Terminal 5, 8 p.m.). Or, avoid the crowd and check out synth-pop stalwarts Ghostland Observatory (Nov. 19, Webster Hall, 8:30 p.m.) and DJ duo MSTRKRFT (Nov. 19, Studio B, 10 p.m.).

Saturday brings French electro duo Justice to town (Nov. 20, Terminal, 8 p.m.), although you might want to check out up-and-comers Dragons of Zynth and local favorite The Harlem Shakes (Nov. 20, Mercury Lounge, 8 p.m.).

AND THE WINNER IS...
Out of more than 4,000 entries to CITY magazine's One City, Many Destinations travel photography competition, New York–based photographer Konstantino Hatzisarros’s stunning image of two young Burmese monks was chosen as the grand-prize winner. Hatzisarros's photograph graces the cover of CITY's fall travel issue, which hits newsstands across the country this week. Hatzisarros also won a Leica M8 camera, a weekend stay at any W Hotel in North America, and a gift certificate to Calumet Photographic. Fifteen runners-up images appear in a special travel photography portfolio inside the issue, taking readers on a photographic journey around the world, from a rainy day in Paris to the streets of Calcutta to the picturesque Cook Islands to the Great Pyramids of Giza. The runner-up photographers each also won Leica cameras.

Elsewhere in CITY's fall travel issue, we slip behind the velvet ropes in Moscow and Rio de Janeiro and discover danger mixing with ultra-luxury. A comprehensive guide to the upcoming winter’s ski season is complete with CITY’s favorite slope-side hotels, après ski cocktails, fireside fashion, ski gear, and ten signature runs every ski enthusiast must try at least once before they retire their boots. Finally, CITY takes Paris’s new free bike program for a ride on the Champs-Élysées and explores stunning new hotels for jet setters to experience this winter. Go to www.city-magazine.com
